"I think"...or do I?

However, I have a story about when that word began to be used as a weapon. So, back in the early 1990s I used to have weekly meetings with some people wherein we discussed certain topics. After a few weeks, I noticed the group kept getting madder and madder at me. Finally, one of the people could no longer keep quiet.

She said, "Angela, you just think you know it all."

I said, "Where do you get that idea?"

She said, "Because you never say 'I think' before stating your opinion."

I said, "Huh. Is that why you are all mad at me?"

They all nodded...self-righteously, if I do say so myself. Please note: The woman did not preface her anti-Angela statement with "I think". So, I then proceeded to state my opinion. "I was under the impression that if it was coming out of my mouth, you knew it was what I thought on a subject. Are you telling me that you cannot tell that the words coming out of my mouth are what I think unless I say 'I think'?"

No, that wasn't it, she said. Instead, and all the others agreed, that if I didn't use the words "I think" to preface a statement, then I was preaching at them, insulting them, calling their opinions worthless. I asked if at anytime had they heard me utter an insult, pound a Bible, or say the word worthless? They all agreed I had not done that. 

I then proceeded to state my opinion again without using the words "I think". I said, "Ah, good for the goose/gander doesn't apply here. In that case, then, y'all are just nuts. There. Is that definitive enough for ya?"

(I can double-guar-O-damn-tee ya every single one of those people were Commies at heart and I bet I could tell you who they voted for in 2008, 2012, and 2020; and they also believe the 2020 election results were not jimmied.) 

But I left that meeting thinking about that. And in this instance twas I thinking original thoughts to myself and I never once said, "Angela, do YOU think this is what you are thinking?"

Here is what I came up after reviewing the entire conversation. 

It seems those people were under the impression that stating anything definitively without first prefacing it with "I think" meant that one was close-minded and not accepting of new ideas. They could not fathom that I had already thought for myself and reached conclusions about any subject as they were still searching for answers. 

So, yeah, I am The Most Brilliant Woman In The World. This I do not deny and I don't just "think" I am, I know I am. And I will not apologize for it. And I will not pretend to be anything else because that is just lying and Satan is the father of the lie and I don't want to be like him, now do I?

Twenty-seven years have passed since that conversation with those people...and it's only gotten worse as the Thought (and Mask) Police — bullies on social media and news and and TV shows and in papers and magazines and in movies and grocery stores and restaurants — run riot over freedom and freedom-loving, God-fearing people.

"I think" I'm right. Do you agree?
