If you ask my son, he would say vote for the Duck. Why? Because he's cool, which is no worse than some of the logic we hear daily from supporters who are pushing Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
So, exactly how does a Duck fit into this scenario? Well, yesterday my son's class went on a field trip to downtown Houston to see the play "Duck for President." Here's a recap of the story:
Life on the farm is tough for Farmer Brown so he decides to assign work duties to the animals (pig, cow, hen, and duck). The animals don't like the work requirements and decide to hold an election to challenge to hopefully vote out Farmer Brown. Duck agrees to run for Farmer (supported heavily by Pig and Cow) and makes tons of promises to the other animals.
He wins and soon finds out that doing all the work on the farm is more than he can handle. Pig suggests he run for Governor because all he would have to do is give speeches and cut ribbons. Duck runs with Pig's help and wins. Now that he is Governor of Texas he finds that the job is tougher than he expected and doesn't like the job.
So, Pig encourages Duck to run for President because all he'd have to do is kiss babies and give speeches. He wins, with Pig by his side as Vice President, by 15 votes. He soon discovers that being President is no fun at all. So he looks in the wanted ads and finds on from Farmer Brown needing a duck to do small chores. Duck decides that sounds pretty good to him and resigns from office, leaving the country in the capable hands of Pig.
At the end of the play the cast did a Q&A with the audience of first graders. They held a vote and, no surprise, the kids voted overwhelmingly for Duck as President, even though they had just seen a play where Duck made promises he didn't keep and quit every position he won. Why? Because he was the "coolest" character.
This mentality bodes well for Donald Trump. Let's face it - some of the voters in this election won't be smarter than first graders, and between him and Hillary, Trump would win the "cool" award even though, like the Duck, he may not trully know what he's getting himself in to as President and may not even like the job if he wins. If that scenario works out, perhaps he'll decide to quit and leave Pence in charge.
